This week, as part of our Open Theatre initiative for The Unplugging, we offered an Artist Talk with playwright Yvette Nolan, hosted by Emily Carr’s Aboriginal Gathering Place and Mimi Gellman, Associate Professor, Faculty of Culture and Community, followed by a performance of the show. The Unplugging, inspired by an Athabascan legend, was a perfect way for our participants and Emily Carr students to explore contemporary Canadian theatre making and the process of transforming oral myth, into text, and then embodied performance.

The Aboriginal Gathering Place at Emily Carr created a welcoming environment for this exploration. The centre encompasses both traditional and contemporary artistic and cultural expressions of Aboriginal peoples and assists with the promotion and coordination of events and workshops related to Aboriginal art and culture.

This is the first time the Arts Club and Emily Carr have joined efforts and we are excited for our future possibilities. Our newly created Community Engagement position will be devising more ways to generate partnerships that deliver shared hopes, goals, and visions for a connected and creative community as we move towards celebrating our 50th season.

About the Open Theatre Access Program: Open Access is a theatre appreciation and learning exploration programme at the Arts Club Theatre Company. We offer complimentary tickets to community groups in Metro Vancouver who work with young people who may not have access to live theatre experiences.
